Who we are

General Purpose is a progressive rock band from Greensboro, North Carolina, dedicated to creating an immersive and intricate approach to live music. Founded and led by songwriters Xul Rutty (Bass/Vocals) and Uno Dos Santos (Guitar), the group blends the energy and complexity of progressive rock with the traditions of classical music and jazz.

Drawing inspiration from iconic acts such as King Crimson, Yes, and Genesis, General Purpose explores various melodic timbres with Voice, Violin, Saxophone, and Guitar all equally sharing the spotlight. The band’s arrangements are focused on creating rich and dynamic landscapes that extend beyond the traditional rock ensemble.

The type of venues range from Auditoriums to Rock Venues to DIY Artist spaces; the music is able to live in any scene. Being one of the few Progressive Rock bands in NC, General Purpose has garnered a dedicated following of people from various age and social backgrounds.
